First blog...

As the current president of the Family Research Association of Mississippi, I welcome you to our new blogspot and what we hope will be a resource and a gathering place for information regarding our association and related topics.  This blogspot will evolve over the coming days and weeks to reflect input from our members.  Please feel free to make comments and suggestions for enhancement and improvement.

Our next meeting is Saturday, November 9th at 10:30 a.m. at the William F. Winters Archives and History building.  Meeting information is listed on the "Upcoming Events" page.

For my first foray in blogging on this site, I want to take a few minutes to explain, at least in part, why we are making the effort to create this "gathering site" at this time.  We see that our numbers of members are diminishing and we realize that is not because interest in research is diminishing, but that the schedules of our lives make it difficult to be everywhere we want to be.  We have become a society of techno-communicators.  We more and more often "visit" via email, Facebook, text, blog, Skype and phone -- and often while doing other things.   We are able to do much of our research with our fingertips and the worldwide web.  However, the majority of us who are still engaging in societies do so because (in part) we understand the power of personal connections and networking, of conversations with others regarding their "people", of sharing of ideas and techniques and successes and stumbling-blocks.  Family research is about individuals -- real flesh and blood people, who lived and died and left legacies and information.  Additionally, and a truly vital point to remember, we know that the reason we can do so much research electronically is because real flesh and blood people have not only done the research, but made it available to be digitized and shared.  In order for that to continue happening, we must continue doing what we do and coming together to share our information, understanding, capabilities and techniques.

So, let's work to make this a place we can share what we are doing, how we are doing it, what we find that works and is helpful, where we've been and why we keep doing it.  Let's network and create a virtual meeting place to supplement our "in-person" meetings and events.

Looking forward to hearing from you!
